What money do you want us to spend?

JULY 22 — The last week or so, it felt as though the government had spent a lot of time stating the obvious.
The poverty line has been revised (at last) and on another note, numbers showed that so many children were unable to access learning resources remotely.
We also have hundreds, perhaps thousands of university students left in a bind as they need to return to campus a lot sooner than anticipated.
With so many Malaysians losing their jobs or getting pay cuts, it feels inappropriate for the prime minister to call on Malaysians to spend.
Spend with what, or whose money?
A lot more Malaysians are more focused on cutting back or saving for a rainy day. In my case, I'm just waiting a few more months so I can switch to a cheaper phone contract.
Mixed reaction to mandatory face masks in public

Tuesday, 21 Jul 2020
PETALING JAYA: As the government mulls making the wearing of face masks in public places mandatory, some are for it while others offer a more cautious view as the country continues in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said complacency had started to set in with many Malaysians disregarding social distancing, wearing face masks and avoiding crowded places.
“I think the statement by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is very apt, relevant and timely.
“From what we have been observing, compliance with the standard operating procedure has been reduced with social distancing and use of face masks not being practised in many places, especially in crowded areas.
“The Prime Minister is warning us not to let our guard down, otherwise there will be a second wave, ” he said.

LETTER | Come October, after the brief moratorium on loans, all consumers will have to face the banks they have taken loans with. This will include those who have lost their jobs or had their incomes reduced. Daily wage earners or workers in the so-called "gig" economy will not be exempted.
It is indeed a challenging and painful period for many individuals and families. Firstly, they may already be facing the loss of employment and income, but what may be scarier is the uncertainty of the future in terms of job vacancies or income stability. They will have to meet the banks to renegotiate their loans.
Now more than ever is the time for banks to show compassionate banking. The concept is basically about the banking system acknowledging difficulties faced by borrowers in trying times.

Banks will not extend moratorium
- Details
Tuesday, 21 Jul 2020
PETALING JAYA: Borrowers will need to start repaying their loans from October onwards as the banks will not extend the automatic loan moratorium, banking sources said.
However, an industry source said while the blanket moratorium would end, banks are open to assist borrowers to restructure and reschedule their loans in a more targeted manner.
“It is estimated that there will be three million borrowers who will take that offer up, ” the source told StarBiz.
Earlier, Bank Negara was quoted as saying that the banks stood ready to assist borrowers in a more targeted manner and have reached out to borrowers to offer various forms of repayment assistance including payment of interest only, lengthening of loan tenure and flexible repayments.
Sources said that among the reasons for a no automatic and blanket moratorium was because the banks wanted borrowers to approach financial institutions to renegotiate their loans.

FMM calls for loan moratorium extension by a further six months
- Details
Monday, 20 Jul 2020 01:58 PM MYT
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has called for the loan moratorium for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and individuals which will end in September 2020, to be extended by a further six months.
In a statement today, the association said this would provide a much-needed breathing space and further ease the tight cash flow that the SMEs and individuals were currently experiencing.
Its president, Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the extended moratorium could provide financial relief to those who are currently economically disadvantaged, especially companies that are struggling to sustain their businesses and workers who have been retrenched and have lost their source of income.
“At the same time, to ensure that the economy can quickly recover, the extended moratorium would allow SMEs to tap and benefit from the various initiatives that have been introduced under the Penjana Short-Term Economic Recovery Plan, without burdening businesses with the cost of servicing their loans/financing and indirectly reduce their cost of business survival,” he said.

Teliti laporan pendapatan, harga rumah mampu milik
- Details
20 Julai 2020
