Prasarana lauds call for mandatory face masks on public transport

KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Berhad said the government's announcement to make mask compulsory when using the public transportation validates it's initiative enforced when the Covid-19 pandemic was in its early stages.
Prasarana Group communications head Rafizah Amran said in March itself, the company made it a must for all MRT and LRT passengers to wear a face mask, sanitise, have their temperature taken and check in via MySejahtera before allowed to board the train.
"Prasarana introduced the compulsory mask wearing rule since the first day of the Movement Control Order (MCO), on March 18 and will continue to enforce it in all our public transportations," she said.
Rafizah was commenting on Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's statement to make it compulsory when traveling via public transportation.

Face mask maker calls for further lowering of ceiling price

PETALING JAYA: The head of a company that manufactures face masks has urged Putrajaya to further reduce the ceiling price of masks from RM1.20 to 80 sen.
Haminnuddin Hamid, CEO of Ideal Healthcare Sdn Bhd, told FMT production costs were currently much lower than they were in March, when Covid-19 began its relentless spread.
“The situation now is different,” he said. “There are sufficient materials. Manufacturers have built up stocks and demand has dropped globally.
“The RM1.20 ceiling price is too high, especially now that masks will be mandatory from August 1.”
The new price will be effective from Aug 15.

Expensive vegetable prices expected with hike in land lease fees, former deputy agricultural minister warns

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — PKR’s Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin has warned of possible vegetable price increase due to high land lease price recently announced for Cameron Highlands farmers.
Sim said farmers who formerly paid only RM900 to obtain a temporary occupation licence (TOL) now have to fork out RM4,500 an acre per year and this will pose burden on consumers.
“When the cost is increased, farmers will have to increase the price of vegetables too and this burden will then be passed on to our consumers.
“Are Malaysians ready to eat high priced vegetables? This will affect our food security because food price will be expensive too,” he told reporters during a press conference at the media centre in Parliament here.
The former deputy agriculture and agro-based industry minister also said that the land lease price hike will affect 2,041 farmers in Cameron Highlands.
Reduce prices of face masks before making them mandatory: Fomca

THE government must ensure face masks are affordable if it wants to make wearing them in public areas mandatory, says Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca).
Commenting on the prime minister’s special address on Monday in which he said the government was considering making mask usage compulsory, Fomca president Marimuthu Nadason said should this be implemented, the government must cap mask prices low enough that it would not be a burden to people.
“I believe this (making it mandatory for people to wear masks in public places) is the right measure to take, so that it becomes a habit for us.
“The only problem is that the government needs to control the prices of masks and ensure they are cheap, for example 50 sen or RM1 each,” Marimuthu was quoted by China Press as saying in its report yesterday.

Dalam isu moratorium, sebenarnya kerajaan tidak mempunyai pilihan selain memberi ‘lampu hijau’ melanjutkan pembayaran balik ini terutama kepada golongan terjejas.Walaupun terdapat beberapa pilihan lain yang dipertimbangkan tetapi ia dilihat tidak membantu sepenuhnya golongan yang betul-betul memerlukan lanjutan ini.
Pandemik Covid-19 bukan sahaja menyebabkan mereka hilang pekerjaan secara tiba-tiba ketika Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan (PKP) dilaksanakan tetapi lebih menekan golongan yang telah kehilangan pekerjaan lebih awal dari tempoh itu dan gagal mencari pekerjaan lain sebelum PKP.
Sepatutnya dalam keadaan terhimpit ketika ini, kerajaan cuba berunding dengan pihak bank untuk melihat langkah-langkah terbaik yang boleh dilaksanakan kedua-dua pihak dan bukannya menyerahkan keputusan itu dibuat institusi perbankan.
Harga siling pelitup separuh muka RM1.20 mulai 15 Ogos

KUALA LUMPUR - Harga siling pelitup separuh muka akan diturunkan kepada RM1.20 seunit daripada RM1.50 bermula 15 Ogos, kata Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Beliau berkata, harga borong bahan itu yang ketika ini RM1.45 seunit juga akan diturunkan kepada RM1.15 bermula pada tarikh sama.
Penurunan harga itu, kata beliau, selaras dengan langkah kerajaan untuk menimbangkan keperluan mewajibkan pemakaian pelitup separuh muka di tempat awam seperti yang disaran Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"Dari segi bekalan, tinjauan dan pemantauan mengenai pengeluaran serta pengedaran pelitup muka adalah mencukupi ditambah juga dengan yang diimport... jadi soal bekalan tidak ada masalah,” katanya pada sesi soal jawab di Dewan Rakyat hari ini.
Beliau berkata, kerajaan akan terus mengkaji keperluan untuk menurunkan harga pelitup separuh muka dan memastikan bekalan mencukupi.

Felda settler loses RM29,000 in 'Pos Malaysia' scam

KUANTAN: A 74-year-old Felda settler who panicked when told that his MyKad, along with his bank cards have been recovered from a parcel by the police, ended up losing RM29,000.
The incident unfolded on July 13 when the victim received a phone call from a "Pos Malaysia Berhad" representative in Kuala Lumpur about 9am claiming a parcel which contained his personal belongings had been seized by the police in Sabah.
Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Superintendent Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the caller informed the victim that the parcel contained his MyKad along with eight debit cards which belonged to him.
"The caller told the victim the parcel was sent from Kuala Lumpur to Sabah on July 6 and provided him with the Sabah police headquarters contact details for him to get further details.

Fake laundry powder seized in Cheras

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs seized 651 units of fake laundry powder worth RM4,882.50 during an inspection on a residential premises in Cheras.
Its Enforcement Division director Datuk Iskandar Halim Sulaiman in a statement yesterday said, the fake products were sold at cheaper prices via Facebook.
The inspection was made following a complaint from the representative of the registered trademark owner of the laundry powder under 'Top' brand, he said.
Iskandar Halim said the packaging of the fake laundry powder was found to be of low quality and there was also a spelling mistake on it.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 102(1)(c) of the Trademark Act 2019.
Big demand for pensioner's water-purifying mudballs

KOTA BARU: Pensioners doggedness to make mudballs to purify water enabled him and his wife to earn RM3,000 to RM4,000 a month since 2010.
The couple, Mohd Nashir Yaacob and his wife, Ramlah Salim, both 61, made mudballs from organic materials at their house in a village, which found a high demand in Kelantan and outside the state.
"Hearing customers complaining of problems with water, such as having foul and fishy smell and rust, I suggested that they use mudballs to purify the water.
"Making mudball goes through a storage process of up to two weeks.
"So 1,200 mudballs are made in a month, which are packed into 400 packages and sold at RM10 each," he said in Kampung Che Arus Kok Lanas, Ketereh, here.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — The Implementation of Temporary Measures to Reduce Impact of Covid-19 Bill, which is being drawn up, is set to create room and opportunities for the recovery process of affected individuals and companies while stimulating the country’s economy in the long term.
Hence, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan expressed hope it would be welcomed and supported by every layer of society in order to achieve the goals in drafting the Bill.
“This is the government’s commitment to reduce the legal impact of Covid-19 with the hope of ensuring the continued well-being of the public,” he said in a written reply to Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (Independent-Jerlun) at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today.
Mukhriz asked whether the government would introduce an Act to protect companies and individuals for failing to fulfil the terms of an agreement or contract as a result of Covid-19.
