鈥淪ince there鈥檚 no price control, the prices of eggs would probably go up by 10 sen and eventually, when there鈥檚 more supply in the market, the prices will stabilise,鈥 he told FMT.
The government reduced subsidies from 10 sen to 5 sen per egg yesterday, with full removal and the end of price ceilings scheduled for Aug 1, 2025.
Egg prices are currently capped at 42 sen (Grade A), 40 sen (Grade B) and 38 sen (Grade C) per egg.
]]>The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (FOMCA) has issued a strong alert to the public, revealing that Malaysia鈥檚 burgeoning vape industry is overwhelmingly controlled by international tobacco companies, not local enterprises. According to FOMCA鈥檚 analysis, over 90% of vape product production and market share in the country is dominated by entities collaborating with global tobacco industries, which have a long history of prioritizing profits over public health.
FOMCA expressed deep concern over what it describes as deceptive tactics employed by these companies. The consumer watchdog alleges that these corporations are using a false narrative of supporting Bumiputera entrepreneurship to obstruct and derail the implementation of crucial national public health policies aimed at controlling vaping. FOMCA views this as a subtle yet dangerous strategy, exploiting nationalist sentiments to shield an industry that ultimately undermines the health and safety of Malaysians, particularly the youth.
Alarming Police Disclosure: Vape Products as Drug Delivery Tools
FOMCA voiced its full support for the recent alarming disclosure by Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. The Deputy IGP revealed that drug trafficking syndicates have begun injecting addictive substances into vape liquids as a new method to create long-term addicts. This development, according to FOMCA, demonstrates that vape products are not only a threat to physical health but are now being exploited as a gateway to drug abuse, which the nation considers its 鈥渘umber one enemy.鈥
The consumer association warns that if this trend is not addressed swiftly, it could lead to a generation suffering from dual addiction 鈥 to nicotine and illicit drugs 鈥 through products marketed openly and attractively, often with colorful packaging that appeals directly to children and teenagers.
]]>PETALING JAYA: Private clinics are still struggling to display the prices of the medicines they dispense, although a ruling requiring them to do so came into effect yesterday.
Some have not even started doing so.
Checks at clinics here found that some were in the midst of compiling and preparing their price lists due to Wednesday鈥檚 gazettement of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Drugs) Order.
Dr Nadir Khan, 60, said that he was busy preparing the price list while treating his patients.
鈥淚 began working on the list on Wednesday. I spent most of last night and this morning drawing up the list.
鈥淟uckily, I have almost finished preparing it. All that鈥檚 left is to print it out later,鈥 he said in an interview.
A 21-year-old clinic nurse , who only wanted to be known as Maisarah, said they had just managed to prepare the price list earlier yesterday.

鈥淰ape bukan sekadar perniagaan tapi ia ancaman nasional.
Consumer advocates say it is the least the government could do to ensure transparency and protect patients from being overcharged.
Several associations said the policy, which came into effect yesterday under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, was a compromise on earlier plans by the health ministry to curb high drug prices.
They claimed that the original plans, which followed World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, involved placing price caps on single-source prescription medicines, but were dropped 鈥渄ue to severe opposition, largely by industry and some professional bodies鈥.
鈥淭his is the minimum that must be done by the government to ensure the carrying out of its mandate which includes promoting ethical and sustainable domestic trade while protecting consumer interests towards a better quality of life,鈥 the groups said.
The joint statement was signed by leaders from the Consumers鈥 Association of Penang, Fomca, Teras Pengupayaan Melayu, RURAL Malaysia, and the Kuala Lumpur Consumer Safety Association.
]]>KUALA LUMPUR: The order to display medicine prices in private clinics and hospitals, effective on Thursday (May 1), has been welcomed by consumers who view the move as a manifestation of the government's concern for the rights and welfare of the people in obtaining health services transparently.
Most of them see this initiative as giving them more power to make purchasing decisions based on clear price information, in line with the principle of consumer rights.
A civil servant in Kedah, 48-year-old Norsyaliza Rosli hailed the move, saying it enables consumers to make price comparisons before buying the required medicines without hesitation or feeling cheated by unscrupulous parties trying to make a profit.
"When the government enforced this action, they can no longer manipulate the prices of medicine arbitrarily because they know that stern action will be taken against them. As consumers, we have the right to choose, so this is something we should support," she told Bernama.
Sixty-seven-year-old Mohd Yasin Zamri, a government retiree from Pendang, said the move would help the less fortunate like him to make price comparisons before making purchases at the pharmacy.
"Sometimes, when buying medicines, prices differ on different days鈥 it's as if they are manipulating the prices.
]]>Consumer Association of Penang president Mohideen Abdul Kader says this includes the use of plastic water bottles at all government facilities, such as offices and schools.
鈥淣ational, state governments and local authorities should ban plastic bottled water from their facilities. Schools, colleges and universities should do the same,鈥 he said in a statement.
He added that over the past two decades, bottled water has become a part of every social function. 鈥淕one are the days when water was served from a jug.鈥
Mohideen said that with the use of plastic water bottles, microplastic contamination is a major concern.
鈥淭his decision was made after taking into account the industry鈥檚 commitment to ensuring sufficient and stable egg production, as production costs have stabilised.
鈥淭his was evident during the recent Aidilfitri festive season, where supply remained adequate and prices were competitive,鈥 it said.
The ministry said that to minimise the impact of the decision, it would collaborate with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry for the introduction of a special grade of egg at an affordable price.
It also said that consumers could continue to buy eggs at competitive prices through Agro Madani Sales and Rahmah Sales programmes nationwide.
]]>From June 20, 2025, all smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union will have to carry a new energy label. This initiative aims to inform consumers about the energy efficiency, durability and repairability of the devices they buy, while encouraging manufacturers to design increasingly environmentally-friendly products.
This measure stems from a European Commission regulation dated June 16, 2023. It is part of the wider framework of the European Green Deal, which seeks to promote a more circular and sustainable economy.
As detailed by the EU, this energy label will display a host of key information, starting with the smartphone or tablet's energy efficiency rating, from A (best performance) to G (worst performance). On the same label, consumers will be able to find the estimated battery life (in hours and minutes) and the battery endurance, or its expected lifespan in number of charge cycles.
The label will also specify the device's durability, resistance to dust and water, and repairability index, ranging from A (highly repairable) to E (not very repairable). Finally, a QR code will give consumers access to an online database containing detailed information on the product and its battery composition.
The aim of this label is to inform consumers about the performance and durability of the device they wish to purchase. Ultimately, the idea is to reduce the environmental footprint of these devices by encouraging the purchase of energy-efficient, easy-to-repair models. The label will be required for all smartphones and tablets sold in the EU from June 20. 鈥 AFP Relaxnews
]]>In a statement, Fomca said plans by several states to ban the sale of vape-related products marked a progressive step towards fulfilling the country鈥檚 responsibility under the World Health Organization鈥檚 Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), a public health treaty ratified by 181 countries.
Malaysia acceded to the convention in 2005 and remains committed to achieving the FCTC鈥檚 target of reducing the use of smoking products to below 5% by 2040, said Fomca.
鈥淕lobal experience has shown that the partial regulation of smoking products is insufficient to achieve significant reductions in the burden of smoking-related diseases. Therefore, the ban on vape sales must continue, supported by firm and consistent enforcement actions,鈥 said Fomca.
]]>KUALA LUMPUR: State governments should ban the sale of vape products through local councils, as they are becoming more popular among children due to their accessibility and flashy advertising.
Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) secretary-general Saravanan Thambirajah said banning the sale of vape products was long overdue.
He said that there had been many complaints from parents and educators that children were exposed to nicotine and sometimes synthetic drugs through vaping at a young age.
"This poses a grave public health concern. Addiction is developing at a young age, and the long-term consequences on brain development, learning and general wellbeing are substantial.
"We are no longer in a position to just study the issue. Action is needed now," he said while calling on other state governments to follow in the footsteps of the Johor government in banning the sale of the product.

Acting Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Deputy Comm Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa said losses amounting to RM573.7mil involving 12,110 cases were recorded between January and March this year.
鈥淓-commerce crime cases recorded the highest increase of 19.8% with 2,535 cases, followed by telecommunications crime at 17.1% involving 5,214 cases.
鈥淭he highest increase recorded in the e-commerce crime category is closely linked to the increase in online purchasing activities by consumers, especially in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration,鈥 DCP Rohaimi said.
Although the overall number of online fraud cases recorded an increase, he said, total losses involving e-finance crimes, love scams, e-commerce crimes and non-existent loans decreased between 1.8% and 24.8%.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have been warned to stay alert amid the rising tide of online scams disguised as "investment" opportunities" or shopping deals that seem too good to be true.
Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) vice-president Datuk Indrani Thuraisingham said scammers typically baited victims with schemes or deals promising quick gains or huge savings with no risks.
These scams are often made to appear believable by linking them to clone websites.
Indrani said there were ads that promised RM10,000 in returns within 24 hours for a RM200 investment and "instant loan approvals".
"These scammers often ask victims to transfer money into personal accounts, using urgency like 'limited time only' to pressure quick action," she said, adding that many such schemes exploited the anonymity of online platforms and weak user awareness.

]]>Despite the existence of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, most consumers don鈥檛 realise that such disclaimers may actually violate their basic rights.
Buying a new product should bring peace of mind鈥攏ot a legal headache. But in Malaysia, the confidence consumers place in warranties is all too often misplaced. From denied claims to ambiguous 鈥渘o return鈥 policies, many Malaysians are finding out the hard way that warranty protections are weak, uneven, and poorly enforced.
When 鈥渨arranty鈥 means nothing
You buy a brand-new bed, backed by a one-year warranty.
Within months, it starts falling apart鈥攏ot from misuse, but from shoddy installation. You show the evidence.
The seller? Ghosts your messages, shrugs off your claim, and stalls until the warranty runs out.
No inspection. No action. Just silence. In the end: no repair, no refund.
Warranty? Worthless. Your money? History.
This isn鈥檛 a horror story鈥攊t鈥檚 a real complaint filed with the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) in March 2025.
And unfortunately, it鈥檚 just one of many stories where "guaranteed peace of mind" turns into a consumer nightmare.
In retail shops and online platforms alike, 鈥淣o warranty, no return鈥 is still treated as a standard business clause in Malaysia.
And despite the existence of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, most consumers don鈥檛 realise that such disclaimers may actually violate their basic rights.
