Fomca chief executive officer Paul Selvaraj said the public wants to know how the government sets the prices for controlled item such as petroleum.
鈥淭he prices should reflect what the consumers are paying. Because when oil prices go up, other prices go up too.
鈥淚n contrast, when the prices go down, other prices do not decrease and we are concerned about that,鈥 he told reporters after attending an event at Eastin Hotel here.
Paul said that the government should also make full use of the Anti-Profiteering Act to crack down on traders who take advantage and raise prices when prices for basic items go up.
鈥淧eople use the oil price increase as an excuse to sell their items at higher prices.
鈥淲e should use the law to make sure prices of food and others reflect the fluctuations in the price of petroleum,鈥 he said.
Paul also said the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) should also step in to check if the consumer is paying the 鈥渞ight鈥 price for sugar.
鈥淚f the world price of sugar goes down, then definitely the price here should go down,鈥 he said, responding to a question on Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua鈥檚 statement claiming that the government had allowed Malaysia鈥檚 sugar duopoly to make super-profits over the past two years.
Pua had questioned the government for not reducing the price of sugar when the world raw sugar price dropped.

]]>From the brochures, he sees car manufacturers extolling the safety and performance of their vehicles. But while checking other sources, he finds groups of car buyers venting their anger and frustrations on the performance and safety of their recently-purchased vehicles.
Furthermore, his friend’s brand new car broke down recently and has to be taken to the service centre frequently because the problem cannot be rectified.
Nicholas is in a dilemma; he is unsure if buying the car of his choice would be a sound investment since a significant proportion of his salary would be spent on paying off the loan and maintaining the car but he really needs one because he cannot depend on the public transport system in his area.
This dilemma is also faced by many consumers in Malaysia who, by now, would have been aware of the series of safety recalls in the automobile sector involving defective air bags, unintended acceleration and faulty ignition. These incidents have dented consumer’s confidence in vehicle safety.
